Blocks Away: A Memorial to 9/11
A Collection of 9/11 Photographs
Photographer and New York native Velvet S. McNeil captured the immediate aftermath of 9/11 with striking photos she made at Ground Zero, starting the day of the attack. The photos serve as a memorial to the more than 2,700 innocent lives tragically lost that day, in addition to the lives lost at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Several of the images were featured in a 2006 exhibit at a gallery in Detroit commemorating the fifth anniversary of the tragedy. Ms. McNeil named the exhibit “Blocks Away: A Memorial to 9/11.”
For the 20th anniversary, Ms. McNeil will revive the exhibit in New York City on Sept. 11, 2021. It will be held at the Planthouse Gallery, 55 W. 28th St., from 1-7 p.m.
The catalog on this site includes all images from the two exhibits, plus several others that have never been displayed.
